RO membranes are designed to allow water to permeate unidirectionally from the feed side to the permeate side, with the permeate side engineered to withstand positive pressure only.
During system startup, shutdown, or valve malfunctions, if the permeate side pressure exceeds the feed side by more than 0.03 MPa (backpressure), it can tear the glue lines of the membrane envelopes, causing irreversible mechanical damage. Therefore, backpressure protection valves are mandatory.
