The average permeated (product) water flow rate is determined using test water containing 500ppm of salt (NaCl), a mineral that's relatively easy for RO membranes to filter out. In contrast, substances like hardness (lime, calcium/magnesium) pose a greater challenge for membranes to remove, potentially lowering the average permeate rate.

Factors such as source water pressure and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS, or total mineral content) level also impact the membrane's permeate output. In real-world scenarios involving municipal or non-municipal water sources, the water quality and pressure often differ from the "testing conditions" used to rate the membranes. Consequently, in most applications, the actual permeate flow rate of the RO membrane typically falls between 30% to 80% of its rated capacity.
