Nitrification - the conversion of ammonia to nitrate by aerobic bacteria - is a slow biological process that requires a high concentration of nitrifying bacteria to proceed efficiently. These bacteria are notoriously slow-growing, meaning they're easily washed out in conventional activated sludge systems with short sludge retention times (SRT). MBR solves this elegantly: the membrane barrier retains all biomass regardless of SRT, allowing you to operate at high MLSS (10,000–15,000 mg/L) and long SRT (20–40 days). The result? A dense, stable population of nitrifiers that can handle high ammonia loads and even maintain activity at lower temperatures where conventional systems fail. Denitrification Without Suspended Solids Carryover
