Cross-Flow Filtration: Sweeping Away the Problem
The fundamental difference between submerged and external MBR is how water moves past the membrane surface. In submerged systems, gentle aeration provides the scrubbing action. In external (sidestream) systems, the mixed liquor is pumped tangentially across the fiber surface at 1–3 m/s - fast enough to create significant shear stress that continuously removes accumulated material. Think of it like a strong wind blowing leaves off a patio: the filtration is happening, but the sweeping action prevents buildup. This cross-flow mechanism is why external MBR can handle much higher solid concentrations and maintain higher flux rates than submerged configurations. It's more energy-intensive, but for the right applications, the performance is unmatched.

Because cross-flow keeps the membrane surface clean, external MBR modules can operate at significantly higher flux - typically 20–80 L/m²·h compared to 10–25 for submerged.
